costume & Make up
as our sub-genre is splatter, costume and make up is particularly important as it includes elements of torture, blood and graphic horror. before we begin to film for our trailer, we have to plan how each of our characters are going to look like. ALSO, as well as costume and make up, props are equally important to make the trailer more terrifying, BELIEVABLE AND REALISTIC AS A LOT OF THEM ARE GOING TO BE USED BY THE ANTAGONIST TO KILL THE CHARACTERS. we will also be making A PROFILE FOR EACH OF THE CHARACTERS SO THAT THE AUDIENCE HAVE A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THEIR ROLES ON THE FILM. TO GET OUR DESIRED HORRIFIC LOOKS, WE WILL BE LOOKING AT YOUTUBE TUTORIALS AND REAL MEDIA TEXTS WHICH WILL INSPIRE US AND THEN WE WILL BE EXPERIMENTING ON OURSELVES TO SEE WHETHER IT WOULD BE SUCCESSFUL OR NOT.
REAL MEDIA TEXTS & INSPIRATIONS
mia the antagonist in the 'evil dead' trailer appears to look quite stressed/tired so makeup could be used to create dark circles/puffy eyes around our antagonist's eyes. also, the antagonist's costume looks wet and dirty after being in the woods which is one of the locations for our trailer and she seems to be under dressed so our antagonist's costume could be an over sized, dirty white top with mud and blood on it.
|
In ichi the killer, we liked the whole torture element which included a lot of blood and horrific scenes. the make up that we particularly liked is the Chelsea smile on ichi's face which would be the iconic look for scarlet in our own horror film. although it is only a scar, we could make the wound look fresh on scarlett to make it look even more horrific.
|
in the horror film carrie (2013), we liked the idea of the antagonist being completely covered in blood that is not hers. as our film is of the splatter genre, the antagonist being covered in blood would imply that the victims (owners of the blood she's covered in) were killed/tortured in a gruesome, unimaginable way.
|
in parts of the 'i spit on your grave 2' trailer, it looks like the antagonist has been beaten up as she has several cuts and bruises on her face which is also covered in blood. as well as our antagonist, we could also use this look on our protagonist to highlight the fact that they have had a rough time being tortured by the antagonist or even trying to escape from her.
|
this is a mood board that shows all our costume and make-up inspirations but also inspirations based on personalities and torture methods. For example, carrie was a girl who was isolated and bullied by people in her school so both her character and look inspired us for the character of scarlett in our trailer. also, other characters such as ichi from ichi the killer and the joker have a chelsea smile look which is the iconic look for our horror trailer. ichi also inspired us because of his horrific torture methods. jennifer hills in 'i spit on your grave' inspires us in terms of scarlett's character as she seeks revenge on the people who attacked her.
this video shows a scene where mia from the evil dead is completely covered in blood and has a rough look which is what we would like to do to scarlett in our horror film trailer.
|
the pendulum trap is obviously too extreme for our trailer but the hand clamp inspired us which we will be using on our character jessica in our film trailer and will involve lots of horror make up.

Costume:
in the equilibrium, scarlett's costume consists of black leggings, a red jacket and boots which are used to portray her innocence as they are seen as simple, girly clothing. however, her initial costume includes red as the colour red connotes blood and danger which is bound to happen in the film. throughout the disequilibrium, her costume would consist of an over-sized plain white shirt with blood and dirt all over it as white connotes innocence and purity but the blood and dirt would invalidate that. her props would be the dangerous tools such as pliers and a sledge hammer which she will used to kill her attackers; the four delinquents.
Name: Michael Blake
Played by: tony
Age: 18
role in film: protagonist (the hero)
Michael is depicted as the most intelligent person in his group of friends and is not quite like the rest. he's a straight A student and takes his education seriously. unlike the others, he can easily differentiate from right and wrong and cares about others more than he cares about himself. he is very close with Leo and Philip but hardly imitates their behaviour. when scarlett is being attacked, he does not take part at all and tells his friends that what they're doing is wrong. Michael ends up being the only survivor.

costume:
michael's costume is fairly simple as it mainly consists of smart/casual clothing that has a bit of colour to it. the different colours connote that he is more of an outgoing person than his friends. he owns some fashionable items such as timberlands but doesn't wear them as often as his friends would. with his costume, in his group of 5, he would be seen as the 'nerdy' one but fits in well with the group. also, he wears his beats headphones to express his love for music.
Name: philip Clinton
played by: Tunrayo
AGe: 18
role in film: the false hero
philip is very outgoing, popular guy who enjoys rap music and never fails to get his voice heard in the crowd. he is depicted as a very rebellious guy and does not care about his education as he spends his entire spare time drinking and getting into trouble. also, many people in his college see him as intimidating but the girls just can't get enough of it. philip did most of the torturing to scarlett but denies it and instead, lies to others that he did no such thing; making things worse as he is calling scarlett a liar. despite all of this, he tries to appear good by pretending to help Michael and Leo resolve the issue and save the others but he doesn't actually care about anyone but himself.

costume:
philip's costume consists of all black/dark clothing which connotes that although he seems like all fun and games to people, he has a much darker side to him as he is completely heartless towards scarlett and doesn't hesitate at all to attack her; a horrific event. he has all the latest expensive clothing such as ralph lauren and Nike huaraches. this 'dark' look makes him look even more intimidating, making others around him fearful.
Name: Leo Johnson
Played by: lewis
Age: 18
Role in film: the helper
Leo is Philip's best friend who always sticks by him throughout the entire journey. he is seen as the 'clown' of the group as he never fails to make everyone laugh but appears to be in a world of his own. his spends the majority of his time smoking weed/shisha and playing fifa because he couldn't care less about his education; just like philip. however, unlike philip and jessica, he is more sympathetic towards scarlett and her situation as he played a part in torturing scarlet but feels regretful.

costume:
Leo's costume is quite similar to philips as it is quite dark in colour; including a hoodie and a nike pouch with timberlands which shows that he would have the latest clothing among his friends along with philip as they tend to imitate each other's behaviour and dress sense. the phone is a significant prop as leo forgets his phone in the college and when he goes back for it, he receives a message from an unknown number saying 'i hear you' which will be the iconic scene for our film trailer; the disequilibrium.
name: jessica black
age: 17
Played by: cherish
Role in trailer: the princess
jessica is philip's girlfriend and is depicted as overly dependent on him. in college, she is one of the popular girls with the help of philip's status and is the only girl of the group. she appears to be very self-centred as spends most of her time applying make-up instead of paying attention in class and following philip around with the rest of the group. she is also quite an ignorant character especially as she was the one who insisted that scarlett should be attacked and couldn't care less about her when she didn't hesitate to join in.

tutorials
we plan on doing the Chelsea smile on our antagonist scarlett after one of the protagonist Philip carves it in her face. this would be the iconic look for our horror film so it's important for us to make it look as realistic as possible.
this look could be used for the protagonists when they are trying to escape from the antagonist early in the trailer. a few cuts and bruises are not too brutal so could mean that the antagonist has not fully dealt with her attackers.
|
in our trailer, there is a scene where the antagonist is about to cut a finger off of one of the protagonist so applying this make up to their wrist would show the audience how much damage the antagonist has already done.
we plan on using this look on one of our protagonists as there is a scene in our trailer where one of them gets dragged on the floor by the antagonist so the audience can see the make up clearly as it starts off with a close-up.
|
this is a look that can be easily done on either the antagonist or the protagonists. if it's done on the antagonist, we could splatter some blood on their face as it's not their blood but for a protagonist, pouring blood would look more brutal.
we would like to use this make up technique all majority, if not all of our characters. it would not only be on their hand but on their face and other parts of their body where we could even add broken glass (CD case) to make it look gruesome.

experiments
in order to make our horrific make up look as realistic as possible, we needed to practice doing them several times. doing these experiments ourselves allowed us to see whether the make up would look ideal for our splatter horror trailer; whether it looks good or if we decide not to use it in the trailer. we also had to buy some equipment such as fake blood and modelling wax to make the make up process successful. we also timed ourselves when doing each experiment and we found that each look takes more or less 5 minutes to do so that needs to be taken into consideration on the day that we film our horror trailer.
Equipment we bought:
|
|
experiment #1
this experiment turned out to be easier than i thought and was fairly quick. however, the wax was quite sticky as it stuck to some of the equipment whilst doing the make up and was hard to take off the skin at the end. to improve, maybe using spirit gum adhesive would help the wax to stay in one place and help it last longer instead of breaking off.
|
equipment: Modelling wax
liquid foundation (matching skin tone) nail filer/spatula fake blood method:
|
experiment #2
this experiment was not harder than the first one as it was pretty much the same thing but in a different place. the only problem that I incurred here was that the fake blood that i used would slide off the wax making the blood look unrealistic/watery so to improve, in my next experiment, i will apply some powder on the wax too see if it stops the blood from sliding off.

outcomes...
scarlett's dead body
one of the most significant scenes in our trailer is the dumping of scarlett's body in the woods. we obviously couldn't put a real person in a bin bag for health and safety reasons so we had to come up with an alternative. we used the top half of a mannequin and wrapped it in a few layers of material (old curtains). we then put it in two bin bags and tied it in the middle. we found this to be a successful alternative as it was fairly quick and easy to do and wasn't heavy which made it easier for our characters to throw. we also thought that it looked quite realistic which is essential for our trailer. |
slit hand look
we did this horrific look on one of our characters jessica for a scene where she is being tortured in the design & technology room by scarlett. since we had done quite a lot of practice, it didn't take too long to do. however, the wax became loose after as while so we concluded that after any look is done, we would need to film the scene as quickly as possible instead of waiting around. the fake blood also tends to slip off very easily so we had to keep topping up on blood. overall, we think that it went well and looks realistic on camera. |
chelsea smile look
we did the chelsea smile look on our antagonist scarlett and this was her look for the entire disequilibrium. initially, we planned to do this look by using some modelling wax to create the cut. unfortunately, we found it extremely difficult to do as the wax just wouldn't stick to her face even with the help of the spirit gum adhesive. we thought of a last minute alternative and we ended up using some tissue and liquid latex to create the cut. we did this by spreading some liquid latex on the side of her mouth and placing layers of tissue on it; leaving the liquid latex to dry. afterwards, we used some black & burgundy face paint on the inside and outside of the wound to make it look deep and realistic then applied some fake blood to it. to make our antagonist appear even more dangerous, we poured fake blood all over it and put some dirt on it to make her look rough and reckless which worked out really well. however, as we were running out of time, we were only apply to do the look properly on one side of her face. |
evaluation
for the costume of each character, we though it worked out really well because each character had all the costume that we needed them to wear such as hoodies and nike trainers. the only costume that we needed to buy was a plain white shirt for our antagonist scarlett to wear which was fairly cheap (£3).
also, make-up wise, overall, we had quite a difficult time trying to create the chelsea smile (which was our main look for our antagonist) while the other cuts and bruises of the other characters were fairly easy. as we planned to re-shoot, we decided to try out a different wax which was recommended to us which we hope would make the chelsea smile wound look more effective.
we also had to find an alternative signature weapon for our antagonist which was initially a sickle but we found that it just looked a bit too unrealistic for our trailer and it broke anyway on the day of filming so we had to come up with an alternative weapon which would be a normal knife or a sledge hammer or even a butcher's knife etc.
