Production/financing company: Twisted Pictures
Principle Cast: Jensen Ackles (Tom Hanniger), Jaime King (Sarah Palmer), Kerr Smith (Axel Palmer)
Sub-Genre: Slasher
Camera
Framing, Shots and movement: There are lots of tilting shots showing buildings this could connote that everything is calm (with the clean new looking buildings) but the fact it is titled (going diagonal) shows it is not fully perfect, that there is unsteadiness within the movie. There is a close up shot showing a victim of the antagonists’ eye. They did this to show the NVC where she looked vulnerable and cautious. There was also use of a low angle shot denoting the antagonist walking on a cagey floor. This connotes he is superior and that he is on top of the victims-could be literally and mentally. An overhead shoulder shot was used denoting the antagonist behind the victim. This connotes that he can see her but she can’t see him giving him power of surprise and the NVC of the victim was that she weak and scared. A zooming out movement was done in the beginning this makes us look like someone is walking backwards away from what’s coming from the tunnel because they are scared of what’s coming out.
Sound
It starts off with like a heartbeat effect where the sound goes steady then has a sudden ‘boom’ noise to keep the audience engaged. This represents our heart that it will be beating like that but as the video goes on it gets faster this will be due to us being scared. There is a deep voice in the background near to the end the deep voice connotes something scary-manly. A voice over with A deep voice was used to make people tremble which contrasts with a high pitch voice will sound sweet and friendly less scary. At the end also there is a gas mask sound where it feels like someone is struggling to breath (breathing heavily) This connotes that someone is panicking and using a lot of energy for example a stock situation which is running away. There was an evil laugh which is a sound effect. This connotes that the antagonist is laughing at the victims that he is superior due to them being in his territory.
Editing
There were quick shots to connote how fast everything is happening and enforcing a lot of action is there to be seen in his horror movie. It makes the audience stay off their feet because they don’t know what to expect.
Colour
Mostly dark colours were used such as dark blue, black, dark red when they were in the mining or tunnel place. These dark colours connote that they are in darkness mainly and shows the victims are in a vulnerable location also the dark red connotes blood which will show how dangerous and gobsmacking scenes are.
Mood and Styling
The trailer makes me feel I’m with the victims or in their position due to the sound of heart beats going slow to fast which connotes something scary is raising it. Also a lot of point of views was from the victims so it put me in that perspective of them and in some scenes it was pitch black which can be inferred to the victims being vulnerable.
Narrative
By watching the teaser trailer the movie looks like its fast pacing and through the quick shots it makes the audience think they are moving with the victims. Also can be moving with the antagonist.

Location: mining area with cages and looks isolated till the people went down there. The fact it is a mining place
Mise-en-scene
Lighting: The lighting mostly came from the torches under the tunnel this was to find the antagonist. This connotes that the victims are in the dark, clueless and frightened if they walk in the dark anything can happen. NVC: The characters NVC are sometimes showing they are trying to be aware through mid-shots they turn their heads to mainly every sound or thought of being anxious that the antagonist is around. The NVC of one lady was that her eyes looked like they were about to cry because she had fear and probably was trapped because her eyes kept looking around in fast pace. One man in the movie had a serious face showing that he could be more stronger than other characters but still he was shocked because he said ‘what is that?’. Setting: The setting is mainly in a dark tunnel which connotes one how closured it is and that it’s hard to see or do various things to get away from the antagonist. The location makes them helpless. Costume: The antagonist is wearing a mask and blacked out beneath connoting he’s hiding his identity. Props: mask that looks like a gas mask which can connote how ancient the antagonist is and that he has been around for a long time in that ancient place. There is torches for them to see where they are going and can see the antagonist before he attacks so it connotes they are prepared for the worst. |
Film Title: The Cabin in the Woods
Release Date: 12th April 2012
Director: Drew Goddard
Production/Financing Company: Mutant Enemy Productions
Principle Cast: Kristen Connolly – Dana
Chris Hemsworth – Curt
Anna Hutchison – Jules
Fran Kranz – Marty
Jesse Williams – Holden
Richard Jenkins – Sitterson
Bradley Whitford – Hadley
Brian White – Truman
Sub-Genre: Thriller/Satire
Synopsis: Five teenagers head off for a weekend at a secluded cabin in the woods. They arrive to find they are quite isolated with no means of communicating with the outside world. When the cellar door flings itself open, they of course go down to investigate. They find a young girl’s book from the early 1900s but when Dana reads from it, she awakens a family of deadly zombie killers. There’s far more going on however than meets the eye as the five campers are all under observation.
Camera
The trailer includes lots of establishing shots and a bird’s eye view to show the viewers where the teenagers are and through this, we can see the kind of environment they’re going in to; mysterious and isolated. There shot of the cabin is at a low establishing shot which connotes that the cabin is a very powerful place and is not what they think it is. The low angle of the cabin may also connote that it is going to make them feel small and vulnerable. There is a wide angle scene where the eagle flies into the force field barrier which suggests that there is no way out of the location other than death. This may be worrying to the viewers especially as an eagle is seen as a bird of freedom. We also see a close-up shot of nine CCTV screens which connotes that their every move is being carefully observed by someone unknown to them; this can be interpreted as a POV shot.
Colour
In the beginning of the trailer, the colours were quite bright which connotes happiness as they had nothing to worry about at the time. Once the disequilibrium had settled in, the colours tended to be fairly dark and dull which connotes death and misery; foreshadowing what is about to happen to the characters.
Typography
Towards the beginning of the trailer, the word ‘Lionsgate’ which is the distribution company look slightly deteriorated and is surrounded by the colour red which implies that the film is going to consist gruesome deaths, violence and danger. The captions that appear throughout the trailer are in a bold white font and in capitals. It’s also surrounded by the force field cage and as the caption appears, electric current flows through the text which connotes that the characters will have a hard time and it will be extremely difficult to escape.
Mood & Styling
The trailer gets the audience to empathise with the characters especially if viewers are around their age or have a similar mind-set. The teenagers set out to the cabin for a fun weekend but ended up being victims of such a horrific event which makes the audience feel uncomfortable and scared for both themselves and the characters as it is easy for them to relate; making the film a success. The trailer connotes that all that is happening to the characters is unexpected which leaves the audience a message – expect the unexpected.
Sound
The beginning of the trailer has a sort of slow, acoustic guitar instrumental so set a happy mood as they are about to go away for the weekend but this calm, positive, non-diegetic sound literally only lasts for about 3 seconds in the trailer as their happiness seems to have come to an end when the man says “acquiring targets” connoting that their ‘fun’ is already over even before it has started. The non-diegetic sound becomes more mysterious as they enter the cabin; the characters are not yet suspicious about anything as they describe the cabin as awesome and they go out for a swim in the lake. However, as we get to the middle of the trailer, the non-diegetic sound becomes faster paced and tense as the killer zombie rises from the lake at night and sees Jules as a target and they soon realise “they need to get out of this place”. The tense non-diegetic is now mixed with some rock music which is interesting because it sounds like the type of music they may listen to so for it to be mixed with such fast paced, tension sounds connotes that it’s meant to be; making viewers of their age feel quite uncomfortable.
Locations
The locations throughout the trailer look dull and isolated. The gas station that they went to, to ask for directions, was also isolated and they happened to meet a very weird and mysterious man which suggests that there are a lot of hidden secrets hidden in all these isolated areas. The sense of isolation connotes helplessness as they are in not in any contact whatsoever with civilization. The locations such as the woods and the cabin are very dark in terms of colour to set a sort of uneasy mood/feeling.
Narrative
The narrative in this teaser trailer seems like it would've had a fairly simple story to it until we see their RV being watch on three different monitor screens which makes the viewers wonder why they are being watched or if they had done something wrong in order to be watched; making viewers uneasy as randomly watching a group of teenagers is seen as abnormal behaviour. When the man says “lock ‘em in”, it connotes that the teenagers are going to experience the unexpected and they are going to have a horrific adventure as they are unaware of what is happening. As viewers, we are just as clueless as the characters in terms of why this is happening so intrigues us even more to watch on and find out.
Editing
In the beginning on the trailer, the pacing appears to be quite slow paced as it shows the equilibrium but then gets faster and faster which creates tension making the viewers intrigued to see what may happen next. The use of quick cuts and montage editing towards the end of the trailer shows all the action of the film which adds excitement and curiosity to the trailer.

Mise-en-scene
Lighting: In the beginning of the trailer, the lighting appears to be fairly normal but once they arrive at the cabin, the lighting goes slightly low key which connotes that the equilibrium is about to be changed. At first, the lighting constantly changes from high to low as they are unaware of what is about happen while they’re having fun. NVC: The NVC of the characters in the beginning of the trailer is quite positive as they are all excited about spending the weekend in the cabin with each other although they looked a bit worried after talking to the weird man at the gas station. For the rest of the trailer, their NVC is negative as they are terrified by the events taking place – the disequilibrium has settled in. Setting: The first setting is shown by a high angle of them in the vehicle driving through the woods which connotes that they will be in isolated area. However, in the following scene, we see a wide shot of their exact location on three different screens which insinuates that they are not alone as they are being watched. Costume: The five teenagers are wearing plain, casual clothing. One of the girls had a simple shirt and denim shorts on which insinuates that they were not ready for the horrific upcoming situation that they were about to incur as it was meant to be a stress-free weekend to enjoy themselves. However, the two men in the control room appear to be smartly dressed which connotes that it’s their job to watch these five teenagers and is taken very seriously; also connoting authority over the teenagers along with knowledge. Props: In the trailer, there is a scene where the teenagers are being threatened by a killer zombie with a machete. The machete is seen as a very iconic weapon in the horror genre as it used by other famous antagonists such as Jason Voorhees. |

Synopsis: A true-crime writer finds a cache of 8mm home movies films that suggest the murder he is currently researching is the work of a serial killer whose career dates back to the 1960s.
Camera
Close ups and mid shots of the different family members for character development. Long shots to establish the setting (attic; dark, scary, mysterious.) Two shots are used at some parts to portray that they’re not alone.
Colour
Majority of the trailer, the colours are monochrome sort of tonality that gives an ominous atmosphere to the setting.
Typography
The first typography used is when it said “9 months later” in a American Typewriter style font, which may convey contemporary technology at the time.
Location
Took place in a family’s house, particularly the upper floors of the house where it’s not very well lit. The attic was the source of the danger as that is where it all began. The danger spreads
Narrative
Starts of with quick cuts of shots showing a family a recent murder of a local family within the house in the shot. Then, 9 months later a new family moves into the residents unaware of what happened to the previous residents. The father (Ethan Hawke) explores the attic and discovers an old reel of celluloid film in a box. The pagan deity starts to appear as he investigates more into what the film and images actually are oblivious to the fact that the images are the source of the danger.
Sound
Silence used as well as score to create suspense and tension. The music had crescendos within the trailer build up to create that feeling of fear and something is coming. A lot of the sounds were non-diegetic sound in addition to voiceovers to narrate the story. Moreover, a lot of abrupt screams sort of sound effects were used to shock the audience.
Pacing
The pacing at first was really slow at first but gradually built up to become quite fast paced towards the end.
On-Screen Graphics/Captions:
The on-screen captions/graphics looked like really dried wallpaper to the point where it starts to crack and deteriorate which may convey that life itself is being sucked dry out of the environment.
Editing
The beginning starts of with a zoom in with quick cuts of shots of what happened to the previous residents of that house to show what had happened to those were previous living there not reveal too much. Then with the same positioning of the camera, it switches to 9 months later daytime to show that it maybe a different time but it’s still the same place: evil.
Camerawork
There are a lot of close up on the protagonist as well as the antagonist to create the sense that the danger/fear is real and present. Also to help the audience feel sympathetic for what the protagonist feels. Mid shot high angles were used to portray that the daughter is weak and vulnerable - almost being that she’s being dominated and manipulated.

Also to help the audience feel sympathetic for what the protagonist feels. Mid shot high angles were used to portray that the daughter is weak and vulnerable - almost being that she’s being dominated and manipulated.
Mise-En-Scene
Costume & Prop: The costume they’re wearing seems quite casual conveying how relaxed and comfortable they are in their own home. One shot of the daughter in bed shows that she has a lot of toys, which may indicate that she’s your typical young daughter who’s afraid of the ‘unknown’. The toys are typical known as a ‘protector’ especially for the young. The old box of celluloid is a significant prop as it was almost like the weapon or the source of the evil. Then came the images as the evil lived in the images themselves. The box was another important prop as the daughter was popping out of the box as if the box was controlling her. Lighting: Dark, monochromatic lighting used to create a sense of emptiness and sinister environment. The low lighting gives off a mysterious territory, which contributes to the fear of the unknown. Setting: The setting at the beginning is a dark neighbourhood with a not very well lit house. The dining room was really dark; only the table and things close to it is lit whereas the corridors and doors are completely dark. NVC: Their NVC indicates that they feel safe and happy as they smile and lie in bed comforting each other. The father is watching the film and he’s leaning on the table towards the projector unaware as to what’s the films themselves actually are. After seeing such explicit content within the film his body language is extremely frightened and disturbed by what he’s seen which marks the point where the disequilibrium begins. Theme The theme of this would be survival over all as the father desperately tries to save his family and himself. Characters The family is portrayed as your average American family moving into a new home because they can’t afford to stay in their previous home. Principle Cast: Jane Levy as Mia

Sub-genre: Splatter
Camera: Framing, Shots & Movements
In this trailer, panning was used in the beginning to allocate the cabin, its surroundings and the mood of the day. Close ups were used to present the terrifying and freakish expression Mia expressed to her brother while she was talking to him and her transformation, once she was possessed by evil. A zoomed in, behind the shoulder, mid-shot of Eric presented him in his room looking at the evil book whilst he is seated at his table. And an extreme close up is used to illustrate the way the book was wrapped to prevent someone from viewing it and used to present the contents in the book, once it had been opened. Tracking and a canted shot was used to show Mia running from something and illustrated her surrounding from which we can tell is in the woods. A wide shot frame was used twice; one to present the cabin in the woods that the 5 of them stayed in and the second time to show the last survivor Mia at the end standing in front of the burning cabin. A low angle, point of view shot was filmed to show one of the girls on the floor being dragged back whilst it showed the other crawling slowing towards Eric in one scene in the bathroom.
Typography
The font style of the captions in the trailer are narrow, classic (simple) and in blocked letters. They are presented on a black background in a white font colour, which distinguish them from one another, allowing the audience to read the caption clearly with no difficulties. Within some captions, are focused words that the audience are expected to notice more. These words are in a larger font size than the rest of the caption. In the evil book, words and short phrases have been, scratched, scribbled and engraved into it meaning it’s important. As the person who did it is trying to make the words bold connoting to importance and eye catching.
Mood & Styling
THE MOOD IS QUITE DEPRESSING AS ONE OF THEIR OWN GETS POSSESSED BY A DEMON SO GETS THE AUDIENCE TO EMPATHISE WITH THE CHARACTERS AS WE CAN SEE THAT THEY'RE ALL SCARED AND THEY HAVE NO CLUE WHAT THEY'VE GOT THEMSELVES INTO.
Sound
ALL THE DIEGETIC SOUND IN THE TRAILER IS SCREAMING AND SQUEAKING DOORS BUT ALSO THE DIALOGUE OF mIA WHISPERING TO HER BROTHER WHICH CONTRASTS WITH THE LOUD NON-DIEGTIC SOUND OF THE THUMPING SOUNDS AND FAST PACED SCORES WHICH CONNOTES THAT WHATEVER EVIL PRESENCE IS POSSESSING mIA AND LURKING IN THE WOODS HAS MORE POWER OVER THE CHARACTERS.

Mise-en-Scene
Lighting: THROUGHOUT THE ENITIRE TRAILER, THERE IS LOWKEY LIGHTING WHICH CONNOTES EVIL AND TERROR NVC: THE nvc OF THE CHARACTERS ARE VERY SLOW WHICH CONNOTES THAT THEY NEED TO BE CAREFUL BECAUSE THEY NEVER KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT. THEY DISPLAY CURIOSITY THROUGHOUT THE TRAILER AS STRANGE THINGS BEGIN TO HAPPEN. Setting: THE MAIN SETTING IS IN A FOREST WHICH IS AN ICONIC LOCATION IN THE HORROR GENRE. BEING IN A FOREST CONNOTES ISOLATION AND HOPELESSNESS WHICH PRETTY MUCH DESCRIBES THE CHARACTERS AFTER mIA BECOMES POSSESSED. Costume:
