In what ways does your media production use, Develop or Challenge Forms & Conventions of Real media products
we used YouTube to dispatch our trailer viral. All other trailers shown to their audience mainly through the source of YouTube so we followed this convention. We made a YouTube channel which is at the button below. This has videos from pre production to production and the final trailer.
we used these social networks to get feedback on the audience and also retrieve information on what they would like on our 3 final products- poster, magazine and trailer. We also used the camera on the mac to interview some people to gain more information about what our target audience wants. By using these modern popular social networks we were more able to get answers in the easiest and efficient way. Due to our target audience being teenagers whom use these social netoworks it was an good idea to use these social networks too.
our poster
title- the title is normally big and has a distinct font which we did following the conventions of the title we put it near to the bottom of the page like our real media text down below did and most posters do. We made the title go down small to big so it moulds nicely with the background and also goes around the main image. we did it in red because it was one of our colour scheme colours and it represents blood.
Main image-we made the main image half of our antagonist face. This connoted mystery showing the audience one side of her which is her evil side which should petrify the audience. We made her face even more frightening by making her eyes all black this connotes shes not normal -supernatural bit. This is due to her coming back from not really being dead but thought to be dead. Also we chose a close up shot because its profound and it allows the audience to see the pain in her face via the scar and blood dripping.
we followed the convention of the main image being in the background of the text and being very large .
Tag line-we followed the convention of having tag line because it gives a memorable hint to the audience what the movie is about.
-tag lines are placed either at the top of the page or near the title we put it near the title and on top of the credits.
release date- we developed the idea of putting the actual date and put coming soon which creates the audience to watch out for it. however several posters say coming soon that we researched also so we followed them that include it.
credits- we included credits because it makes the magazine look more professional we followed where it normally should go which is the bottom of the page and kept the font the right size which is small. We also followed the font which is 'steel tongs'.
website- we used this convention because it reaches out to our target audience that are teenagers 15 plus. who tend to use technology more than adults.
cast- we used the cast names to fill the empty space at the top of our poster and we wanted to give credit to the actors. We followed this convention that is optional-not all posters have this.

captions
Captions are very important because they help tell what's happening in the trailer/helps basically telling the story of the movie in a few words or one word at times. Captions can have varied movements/motions and have backgrounds.
real media text captions
our trailer caption
WE FOLLOWED THE Convention of captions.
-WE FOUND OUT AT THAT MOST HORROR FILM TRAILERS USE A DARK BACKGROUND FOR THEIR CAPTIONS TO CONNOTE FEAR AND MYSTERY. so WE ALSO USED A DARK BACKGROUND WHICH WORKED OUT WELL.
-WE USED A SIMPLE FONT STYLE NOTHING TO COMPLICATED SO THAT THE AUDIENCE DO NOT GET CONFUSED WHILST READING IT. wE USED 'STEEL TONGS' FONT AND SEPARATED THE LETTERS A BIT. its A NICE BOLD WRITING AND WE MADE THE FONT SIZE LEGIBLE TO READ BY IT BEING BIG.
-BY LOOKING AT THE REAL MEDIA TEXT MOST OF THE TEXT COLOUR FOR THE CAPTIONS ARE WHITE OR GREY WHICH WE ALSO HAVE UTILISED IN OURS. IT CONTRASTS WELL WITH THE DARK BACKGROUND MAKING TI VISIBLE FOR THE AUDIENCE.
-CAPTIONS ALSO HAVE A MOTION WHEN GOING ON TO THE PAGE. OUR TRAILER HAS A EFFECT WHERE IT SLIDES IN FROM LEFT TO RIGHT, ANOTHER WAS IT COMING FROM BEING SMALL TO GETTING LARGER AND THE BACKGROUND GETS ZOOMED IN WHILST THIS IS HAPPENING MAKING IT LOOK 3D WHICH WORKED OUT NICE.

trailer certification
we added trailer certification to make our trailer realistic and similar to real media text more. It heps enforce they that the trailer is legal and appropriate for the audience. Also giving websites for them to search.
editing
editing is a vital convention because it makes the film trailer better. Adding effects can cause different affects on the audience such as them being scared, cautious and many more. Editing also makes the trailer unique. we used final cut pro for the editing of our trailer.
black and white effect
our trailer
we used this effect to represent/connote a flashback because they are going back to when the delinquent teenagers tortured the girl Scarlett. Before she came the antagonist and seeks revenge. It was effective because it made it look old which we was trying to get the audience know it happened in the past. The caption reinforces though so the audience should know.
|
real media text
they used the same effect and it is good because we followed it due to the fact this movie for the trailer has as sub genre of splatter also. They only had a difference from our trailer is that they used extra effects too which made it look more old which was like the line across the screen that looks like a cob web making it look like it happened on film and the film was dusty with cobwebs.
|
fast cutting montage
this is when the trailers paste goes very fast showing various scenes this helps show dreadful scenes to give the audience a taste of what they are in store for when they watch the actual movie.
Fast cutting is a film editing technique which refers to several consecutive shots of a brief duration (e.g. 3 seconds or less)
and a montage is a series of scenes.
Fast cutting is a film editing technique which refers to several consecutive shots of a brief duration (e.g. 3 seconds or less)
and a montage is a series of scenes.
our trailer
fast cut montage has been used from 0.28-0.32 seconds in our trailer showing very eventful scenes that could persuade our audience to watch it. Fast cut also brings about a mood just like when our heartbeat gets faster when we are scared. The paste of the trailer can reflect it too.
-we was influenced by 'i spit on your graves' montage. |
real media text
the fast cut montage was used at 0.28-0.30 seconds which was shorter then our trailers montage. so we challenged there timing and made it longer.
-similar to our trailer they showed eventful/ action scenes within this fast cut montage. This could mirror to tell the audience everything happens so fast. The paste was needed to show glimpses of these interesting and gob smacking scenes to keep the audience on their feet. |

cross dissolve
is used to connote a passage of time. Creating the audience to keep up with the storyline and shows two events happening at the same time.. It is a swift process where it goes from one slide of a vidEO (scene) to another. It goes faintly black and quickly goes to next scene which makes everything sequence nicely.
-All real media texts use this editing technique because it is very vital/essential. For example 'the conjuring' USE IT THROUGHOUT THEIR TRAILER.

View Finder Effect
we used it as a way of presenting a CCTV view. Due to the fact its set in a college and we used a high angle shot from a high stand also making it look like a bird eyes view. It helps put the audience in perspective also making it look realistic depending on the angle.
-It could be used for like someone holding a camera and the audience watches it like they are the cameraman which is used a lot in REc and rec 2.

we used color corrector effect to make some scenes darker to create a spooky outcome on the trailer. IN some scenes like outside it is too bright so we toned it down via editing and using color corrector.
-Many real media text use it to hide the original lighting of their video shot. |
production logo animation
we used this to give credit and let the audience acknowledge the production and distribution team who worked hard to get the movie going/starting. in general the logos come in different movements which make them unique and more eye catching/memorable . It is normally at the start of the trailer but some trailers challenge this and put it half way or just before half way like the real media text- 'nothing left to fear'
our including of production and distribution company in trailer
we previously created logos for our movie. We made a sound logo which we didn't include in our trailer because we researched what logos are mainly used in trailers and sound is not really there.
-we made the animation of the logo simple where it fades and comes back on the screen. Sometimes simplicity is better then complexity. -Likewise the real media text-'nothing left to fear' used a simple effect of fading in and out on the logo. |

lighting
the lighting is mainly dark in horror trailers to spook the audience out. However when there is bright lighting it makes the video more quality in some cases.
sound
some of the software we used for sound was 'freesfx' and 'garageband' which was helpful. We had a wide selection of sounds to choose from.
-sound is significant in a trailer because it sets a mood for the audience and reflects the mood of the trailer for example if there is a happy scene (equilibrium) then tehre would be sounds to suit it which would be happy too. Vice versa for a scary moment (disequilibrium)

some of our trailers sounds...
these are mainly score sounds...
this is a score sound that was used faintly in the background.
this sound was used throughout most of the trailer. The sound is in a rhythm of a heartbeat but it sounds more mechanical -less human. This makes it more scary and challenges the usual convention of the sound of an heartbeat where it gets faster and faster to represent a person is frightened.
we used this sound near the end to end it on a sound that is sudden and scary. It represents the props used and how fatal the torture is which is swift.
This was used when the door was opening before the teenagers torture Scarlett. The squeaking of the door makes it spooky because in our trailer we didn't show them opening the door which can make the audience watch it more to find out.
this sound was used once to shock the audience.
this was used in our trailer to represent when the dumping of the body happens. It was like a sound effect for the body touching the ground but we did not show it to the audience so that they could infer via the sound.
|
Real Media Text
-these trailers had an influence on our trailers sounds. All of them start of slowly then speed up in paste drawing close to the end. More action scenes happen towards the end. |
characters
our characters that featured in 'I hear you'
our characters are teenagers that are taking a gap year and had a reunion. Likewise in texas chainsaw massacre (on the right) they had young adults. We had a mixture of girls and boys. We also had a leader which was the person below... and the other characters have different roles too.

|
we applied Toddorovs theory to our trailer. Our trailer is on the left picture and a real media text is on the right for a zombie type of genre appled to toddorovs theory.
The length of the film trailer is vital because it is a trailer it is normally between 1 Min-2 mins long. Although a teaser trailer would be under 1 minute. we followed the convention of having it just over 1 minute like real media text such as paranormal activity. The trailer shouldn't be too long because it could reveal too much and if its to short itll reveal too little and the story line wont make sense.
some camera shots used
Establishing shot
we used this shot to reveal tot he audience the settings of the horror movie. Our settings is a college. Similarly in Carrie they used a establishing shot and many other horror movie trailers use it so we followed this convention. long shot
we used a long shot which normally shows the protagonist which is the victim. In our trailer we use a long shot to show our villain before she turns evil so in this picture on the left she is a victim. -Likewise in insidious the victim looks innocent and lonely like ours. The victim is a female which was similar as well. so we followed the convention and it worked out well because long shots show the location a bit as well making it spooky and makes the audience wonder whats going to happen in that area. close up
we used this shot to zone in on mainly a scary moment or shocking for the audience. It mainly shows a prop in real media text so we followed this too. -in world war z trailer on the right they used a lighter spark for prop-in our trailer we used a tool from the dt room. |
|
some camera movements
tracking
we used the camera movement of tracking to grasp a scene where two teenagers are walking. This helped us catch a synchronize flow of there movement and keep up with them the smoothest way. The tracking was slow connoting something deadly could happen. -we challenged the fact that tracking is normally for fast movement like running for example in the world war z trailer on the right however we used it for slow walking which still has a horror effect. hand held technique
was used (steady cam) for the scene on the left in our trailer. the cameraman followed the teenagers with being used for an over shoulder shot view. This put the audience in perspective of being with them at the time which engages them. -Likewise rec trailer uses a lot of steady cam to capture the following of the victims. I stopped the trailer on the right where they use steady cam. |
|
we followed the convention of setting and had various settings. Settings is very important in a horror trailer because it sets the mood and scene-the target audience can be even scared of the setting if its dark and mysterious. Most settings are abandoned, having a deserted setting which makes the audience what could be lurking there or why is it deserted?
our trailer
we used the college because after day it could be made scary. Our characters went back to the empty college in the night-by them being alone makes it more mysterious and causes the audience to be cautious. We we were able to use the Design and Technology room which was all thanks to the settings where we utilised equipment that we made our props. Many horror films are in buildings also so we followed that.
|
.
we used a woody area within the college because we couldn't actually go to a woods due to time and other factors. The setting came out nice in the trailer and it was effective because the woods is normally an open alienated place. IN the scene above a body is being dumped showing that no one goes there.
|
Real Media Text
in a real media text many of the settings are in isolated places. For example in 'Cabin in the woods' they go to an abandoned cabin which makes the victims vulnerable because is harder for them to get help. So it is very effective if the setting is in is isolated sometimes which we followed in our trailer-an isolated college.
